A cleaner, quieter unit against a colder, better-drained one

This is a more genuinely head-to-head matchup than it first looks, because the AprilAire E080 and the AlorAir Sentinel HDi90 each win decisively on different specs, and neither is a soft loser anywhere. The E080 is rated at 80 pints per day at the AHAM condition of 80°F and 60% relative humidity, with a manufacturer-claimed coverage of 4,400 square feet. The HDi90 is rated at 90 pints per day at that same AHAM condition — plus a saturation rating of 198 pints per day measured near 100% humidity — with a claimed coverage of 2,600 square feet. Cold weather is the HDi90’s decisive edge

For a crawl space, the operating floor is one of the most important specs on the sheet, and here the gap is large. The E080 is rated to work down to 50°F; the HDi90 keeps going down to 33.8°F. In an unconditioned crawl space during a cold snap — exactly when condensation risk peaks — a unit that stops at 50°F is idle on the days you most need it, while one rated nearly to freezing keeps removing moisture. If your crawl space gets genuinely cold in winter, this single difference is reason enough to lean toward the HDi90.

Drainage flexibility also favors the HDi90

The E080 drains by gravity with no pump in the box; the HDi90 includes a condensate pump and supports both pump and gravity drainage. In a crawl space, the nearest usable drain is frequently not downhill from where the unit has to sit, so the HDi90’s built-in pump can save you the cost and install work of adding one, and it lets you push condensate up and out rather than being limited to a gravity path. If your drainage needs a lift, the E080 means a separate pump purchase; the HDi90 doesn’t.

Running cost: both verifiable, from different sources

Both units let us put a real number on the bill, though the numbers come from different places. The HDi90 publishes a rated 293 watts, drawing 5.56 amps, with an energy factor of 2.69 liters per kWh — a notably low wattage for a 90-pint unit — so we estimate its cost our usual way: watts divided by 1,000, times an assumed 12 active hours a day (a 50% duty-cycle assumption, since the compressor cycles rather than running continuously), times 30 days, times the months you run it, times your rate. The E080 publishes no wattage, but it’s ENERGY STAR certified, so we use the EPA’s DOE-measured annual figure of 632 kWh per year times your rate instead.

Two honest caveats. First, the figures rest on different bases — the HDi90’s is our seasonal wattage estimate, the E080’s a standardized full-year measured value — so we won’t stack them as a direct “cheaper” claim. Second, on the efficiency each does publish, the HDi90’s 293-watt draw is genuinely modest for its capacity, which points to low running cost. The fair summary: both are verifiable rather than guesswork, and the HDi90’s low measured wattage is a real efficiency strength — check each on the operating cost calculator with your own rate to see them on their own terms.

Filtration and noise are where the E080 answers back

The E080’s case rests on two specs the HDi90 handles poorly. The E080 uses a MERV-8 filter; the HDi90 uses a MERV-1 filter — the floor of the filtration scale. In a crawl space where reducing a dusty, musty environment is part of the goal, MERV-8 does meaningfully more than MERV-1, and that’s a real, plainly stated advantage for the E080. Noise runs the same direction: the E080 is rated at 45 dBA against the HDi90’s 58 dBA, so under a quiet part of the house the AprilAire unit is the noticeably less intrusive one. If air cleanliness and low noise are near the top of your list, the E080 is the better-suited machine.

Size, coverage, and the numbers to read carefully

Two more differences deserve an honest note. On coverage, the E080 claims 4,400 square feet against the HDi90’s 2,600 — even though the HDi90 carries the higher AHAM capacity. That isn’t a contradiction so much as a reminder that coverage claims rest on each manufacturer’s own assumptions and aren’t directly comparable the way AHAM ratings are; lean on the AHAM figures and your own sizing calculator result rather than the coverage claims when the two disagree. On size, the E080 is lighter and shorter at 63 pounds and 15 inches tall, while the HDi90 is 70.5 pounds and 17.7 inches tall — so in a tight crawl space, the E080 is the easier fit. The HDi90 moves more air, at 210 CFM versus 185, and carries a six-year warranty to the E080’s five. How we’d choose between them

If your crawl space runs cold, or your drainage isn’t conveniently downhill, the AlorAir Sentinel HDi90 is the better all-around match — its cold-weather floor, included pump, and low, documented wattage are a strong set for a demanding, unconditioned space. If instead your space is large and doesn’t get bitterly cold, and filtration and quiet operation rank high, the AprilAire E080’s MERV-8 filter, lower 45 dBA noise, and easier fit make it the more sensible pick — and its ENERGY STAR–measured energy figure means you can budget its running cost with confidence, so cost transparency is no longer a reason to favor one over the other. Confirm your climate, clearance, and drainage path first, and let whichever of those constraints binds hardest decide it.
