Two capacity numbers, and the gap between them
The AlorAir Sentinel HDi90 publishes two capacity figures, and understanding why they differ tells you most of what you need to know about reading any dehumidifier spec. Its AHAM rating is 90 pints per day at 80°F and 60% relative humidity — the standardized lab benchmark. Its saturation rating is 198 pints per day, measured near 100% humidity. That’s more than double, and it isn’t marketing sleight of hand: saturation is best-case performance in a soaking-wet space, while the AHAM figure is a controlled, comparable condition closer to what a managed crawl space actually experiences. Use the 90-pint number to compare the HDi90 against other units, and read the 198-pint figure as headroom for a genuinely saturated space rather than an everyday rate. Its manufacturer-claimed coverage is 2,600 square feet, which — as with any coverage claim — is a starting point to check against your real volume and climate in the sizing calculator, not a guarantee.
The spec that sets it apart: it runs cold
The single most important number on the HDi90’s sheet, for a crawl space, is its operating floor: 33.8°F. Crawl spaces are unconditioned, and in a cold snap the units that quit around 50°F stop pulling moisture on exactly the cold, damp days when condensation risk is highest. A dehumidifier rated to keep working just above freezing is doing its job year-round in a climate where a warmer-floored unit takes the winter off. If your crawl space gets genuinely cold, this spec alone can be the deciding factor.
This is also the clearest reason not to drop a regular residential dehumidifier under the house instead. Residential units are built for living-space conditions, not the low temperatures, tight clearances, and dust of a crawl space, and they can ice up or simply stop dehumidifying as it gets cold — where a purpose-built unit’s coil and defrost behavior are engineered to keep running. Regular units also tend to rely on an internal tank you empty by hand rather than continuous or pumped drainage. A pump in the box changes the whole install
The HDi90 includes a condensate pump and supports both pump and gravity drainage. This is a real, practical advantage over gravity-only units: you’re not sourcing and wiring a separate pump, and you can push condensate up and out to a drain point above the unit rather than being limited to somewhere water will fall on its own. In a crawl space, where the nearest usable drain is often not conveniently downhill from where the unit has to sit, that flexibility saves a genuine amount of install headache. It’s ductable as well, with the highest airflow of the units we’ve reviewed at 210 CFM, so it moves air through a larger space effectively.
The trade-off is bulk: at 70.5 pounds with a cabinet 15.2 inches wide, 23.2 inches deep, and 17.7 inches high, it’s the heaviest and tallest of these three units. The 17.7-inch height in particular is worth measuring against your joist clearance before you buy — the cold-running and pump advantages don’t help if the unit won’t fit under the floor.
What it draws, and what that costs
The HDi90 has a verified electrical rating, so the operating-cost estimate above is a real calculation. It’s rated at 293 watts, drawing 5.56 amps, with an energy factor of 2.69 liters per kWh. That wattage is notably modest for a 90-pint unit, which is a point in its favor: we compute annual cost as watts divided by 1,000, times an assumed 12 active hours a day (a 50% duty-cycle assumption, since the compressor cycles rather than running continuously), times 30 days, times the months you run it, times your local rate. A lower wattage feeds straight through that formula into a lower bill, so a 293-watt unit costs meaningfully less to run over a season than a higher-draw unit of similar capacity. To put that in the range published cost guides report: monthly running costs for residential-scale dehumidifiers commonly fall between $10 and $30, with unit size a major driver of where you land — a small unit can sit under $18 a month while a large, high-draw one runs past $36. The HDi90’s combination of real 90-pint AHAM capacity and a low 293-watt draw is what makes it interesting on this axis: you’re getting high capacity without the electric bill that usually rides along with it, which over a full humid season is where the savings actually accumulate.
The filter is the weak point
The HDi90’s filter is rated MERV-1. That’s the floor of the filtration scale — enough to keep large debris out of the coil, but minimal particulate filtration compared to a MERV-8 unit. For a crawl space, whose whole point is often to reduce a dusty, musty environment, that’s a genuine limitation worth naming plainly rather than glossing over. If air cleanliness matters as much as moisture control in your space, the HDi90’s filter is its softest spec.
Noise is the other trade-off: it’s rated at 58 dBA, the loudest of the three units here. Under an occupied part of the house, that’s audible, and it’s a fair reason to weigh it against a quieter unit if the crawl space isn’t well isolated from living space.
Living with it
The HDi90 carries a six-year warranty per its record. Once it’s in, target the 45–55% relative humidity band most crawl space guidance recommends, hold 60% as the ceiling you don’t want to cross, and remember a humidistat cycles roughly 3–5 points around its set point rather than holding an exact number.
Who should NOT buy this
Skip the HDi90 if filtration is a priority — MERV-1 is minimal, and a MERV-8 unit will do noticeably more for air quality. Skip it if the crawl space sits under a quiet room and noise matters, since 58 dBA is the loudest option here. And skip it if clearance is tight: at 17.7 inches tall and 70.5 pounds, it’s the biggest, heaviest unit of this group, and a lower-profile dehumidifier will be far easier to place and service. If none of those is your situation, its cold-weather floor and included pump are hard to beat.
