Same family, one real question: how big is your space?
The AprilAire E100 and E130 are the two upper-capacity units in AprilAire’s crawl space line, and choosing between them isn’t about brand or features — those are largely shared — it’s about matching capacity to a space without overbuying. The E100 is rated at 100 pints per day at the AHAM condition of 80°F and 60% relative humidity, with 5,500 square feet of claimed coverage. The E130 steps up to 130 pints per day and 7,200 square feet. Both are the standardized AHAM lab ratings, useful for comparison rather than daily-output promises, and neither model publishes a saturation figure. Size and weight separate them more than capacity does
The specification most likely to decide this isn’t pints — it’s physical bulk. The E100 shares the compact-for-its-class 14-inch-wide, 26-inch-deep, 15-inch-high cabinet at 64 pounds. The E130 is substantially larger: 19.5 inches wide, 30 inches deep, 18.75 inches high, and 98 pounds. In a crawl space, that gap is decisive. The E130’s 18.75-inch height has to clear your joists, and 98 pounds is a genuine two-person job to place in a space you often enter on your hands and knees. Plenty of crawl spaces that could use the extra capacity simply can’t take the extra cabinet — so measure your clearance and access before capacity even enters the conversation.
The efficiency and noise numbers actually favor the bigger unit
Counterintuitively, the E130 posts the better efficiency and the quieter operation. Its energy factor is 2.9 liters per kWh against the E100’s 2.6, meaning it removes more water per kilowatt-hour, and it’s rated at 50 dBA versus the E100’s 55 — five decibels quieter despite the larger capacity. So if you genuinely need the capacity and can fit the cabinet, you’re not paying for it in efficiency or noise. What you are paying in is draw: the E130 pulls 8.3 amps to the E100’s 6.9, which is the expected cost of moving more air (310 CFM versus 280) through a bigger space.
Both give you a verified, measured running cost
Here’s a genuine advantage of comparing two ENERGY STAR–certified units: neither AprilAire sheet publishes a rated wattage, but both models are in the EPA’s certified-product registry with a DOE-measured annual energy figure — so we can put real numbers on both rather than estimating from a nameplate. The E100 is rated at 821 kWh per year and the E130 at 926 kWh per year.
That turns the efficiency comparison into actual dollars. At our default electricity rate, the E100 runs roughly $131 a year against the E130’s $148 — the bigger unit costs a bit more to run, as you’d expect, but not dramatically so, and both figures are measured rather than inferred. The gap is modest enough that running cost shouldn’t drive this decision on its own — but it’s reassuring that, unlike many units in this category, you get to make the call with real numbers instead of a shrug on both sides.
What they share
Most of the rest is common ground: both use MERV-8 filters, both drain by gravity with no included pump (so budget a pump if your drain sits above the unit), both are ductable, both are rated to operate down to 50°F, and both carry a five-year warranty. That 50°F floor is worth noting for both — in a crawl space that gets genuinely cold, either unit stops removing moisture on the coldest days, so neither is the pick for a cold-climate space regardless of size. How to actually make the call

If it comes back comfortably at or below 100 pints, the E100 is your unit and the E130 is wasted capacity and bulk. If it pushes past what a 100-pint unit can hold — a large or badly damp space — then the E130’s headroom is what keeps it from running flat out. Remember that a humidistat holds a range, cycling a few points around its set point rather than an exact figure, so you want the unit that settles into a 45–55% target band without either straining up to it or overshooting it in short bursts. The E130 only wins that comparison in a space big enough to keep it working steadily; everywhere else, the E100 holds the same target with less cabinet to place.

For most crawl spaces, the E100 is the right call: 100 pints and 5,500 sq ft of coverage already exceed what a typical space needs, and its smaller, lighter cabinet is far easier to fit and place. Step up to the E130 only when the space is genuinely large — big enough that a 100-pint unit would run flat out and still fall behind — and only after confirming the sizeable cabinet will physically fit. The E130 rewards that specific situation with more capacity, better efficiency, and quieter operation, but for everyone else the extra size is pure downside.
