Same headline capacity, opposite priorities

The AprilAire E100 and the AlorAir Sentinel HDi100 both carry a 100-pint AHAM rating — 100 pints per day at 80°F and 60% relative humidity — so on the top-line number they look interchangeable. They aren’t. These two units make almost opposite trade-offs everywhere else, and picking well means deciding which set of compromises fits your crawl space. The spec grid above shows the full picture; below are the four differences that should actually drive the choice.

Cold tolerance is the sharpest divide

The single biggest difference is the operating floor. The E100 is rated to work down to 50°F; the HDi100 keeps going down to 33.8°F. In an unconditioned crawl space during a cold snap — precisely when condensation risk peaks — the E100 stops removing moisture while the HDi100 keeps running. If your crawl space gets genuinely cold in winter, this alone can settle the decision in the HDi100’s favor, because a 100-pint unit that goes idle on the coldest days isn’t doing the job when it matters most.

Drainage: pump versus gravity

The HDi100 includes a condensate pump and supports both pump and gravity drainage; the E100 is gravity-only with no pump in the box. Where the nearest drain isn’t conveniently downhill from the unit — common in crawl spaces — the HDi100 lets you push water up and out without adding a separate pump, while the E100 means sourcing and wiring one. That’s a real cost and install difference, not a footnote.

Coverage, filtration, and noise swing back to the E100

Now the other direction. The E100 claims 5,500 square feet of coverage to the HDi100’s 2,900 — nearly double the reach for the same AHAM capacity, which matters if your space is large or split into hard-to-reach bays. It also uses a MERV-8 filter against the HDi100’s basic MERV-1, so it does meaningfully more for air quality in a dusty crawl space. And it’s quieter: 55 dBA versus the HDi100’s 60, the loudest rating in its class. One number the HDi100 does add is a saturation rating — 220 pints per day near 100% humidity — which the E100 doesn’t publish; read that as wet-space headroom rather than an everyday figure.

Running cost: verified for the E100, not for the HDi100

This is a real, and maybe underappreciated, difference between them. Neither sheet publishes a rated wattage, and we won’t turn amps and volts into a cost — that’s apparent power, not true consumption. But the E100 is ENERGY STAR certified, so the EPA publishes a DOE-measured annual energy figure for it — 821 kWh per year — which lets us give you a genuinely verified operating cost, around $131 a year at our default rate. The HDi100 is a commercial-grade unit that isn’t ENERGY STAR certified, so no equivalent measured figure exists, and we won’t invent one from its 6.82-amp draw.

So on cost transparency, the E100 has a clear edge: you can budget it from a real number, while the HDi100’s running cost stays an honest unknown. Let your climate and drainage break the tie

Because these two split so cleanly, the decision usually comes down to two questions about your specific space, not a general “which is better.” First: does your crawl space get genuinely cold in winter? If it drops toward or below freezing, the E100’s 50°F floor means it stops working when condensation risk is highest, and the HDi100’s 33.8°F floor becomes close to non-negotiable. If your climate is mild enough that the space stays above 50°F, that advantage largely evaporates and the E100’s other strengths come forward. Second: where’s your drain relative to where the unit has to sit? If water needs to travel uphill to reach it, the HDi100’s built-in pump solves that out of the box; if you have a gravity path, the E100’s lack of a pump stops mattering. Answer those two, and the filtration, coverage, and noise differences usually just confirm a decision the climate and drainage already made. There’s no single winner, because these two are built for different crawl spaces. Choose the HDi100 if your space runs cold, or if your drainage needs a pump to lift water to a distant drain — its 33.8°F floor and included pump directly solve those problems. Choose the E100 if your space is large and doesn’t freeze, and you value the wider coverage, the finer MERV-8 filtration, and the quieter operation. Both weigh a bit differently too — the E100 at 64 pounds is lighter and easier to place than the 88-pound HDi100.
