AlorAir vs AprilAire: How the Two Brands Actually Differ

The two brands are answering different questions

Put an AlorAir Sentinel next to an AprilAire E-series unit and the spec sheets disagree about almost everything except the shape of the box. That isn’t one brand being better documented than the other. The two lines were designed against different priorities, and the published numbers show it clearly enough that you can pick between them without ever seeing either unit.

We hold verified spec data on seven units across the two brands: the AprilAire E080, E100 and E130, and the AlorAir Sentinel HD55, Sentinel HDi90, Sentinel HDi100 and Storm LGR Extreme. Everything below comes from those records. Where a brand doesn’t publish something, we say so rather than filling the gap.

One thing neither brand gives us: a price. Every one of the seven records has a null MSRP and a null street price, so nothing here is a value judgement. This is about what the two brands build, not what they charge.

The sharpest split is the temperature floor

AlorAir states a minimum operating temperature of 33.8°F on the HD55, HDi90 and HDi100, and 34°F on the Storm LGR Extreme. AprilAire states 50°F on the E080, E100 and E130.

For a crawl space, that gap is the whole decision in one number. A sealed, conditioned crawl space under an occupied house may well stay above 50°F all winter. A vented crawl space in a cold zone will not, and a dehumidifier with a 50°F floor has nothing to offer it during the months the floor joists are coldest.

This is a published specification from both manufacturers, not an inference. If your crawl space drops below 50°F, the AprilAire line is rated out of the job and the AlorAir line is rated for it. That single fact resolves more of this comparison than anything else on the page.

Only one of these brands publishes a verified running cost

The AprilAire E-series is ENERGY STAR certified, and the EPA’s certified dehumidifiers registry carries a DOE-measured annual energy figure for each of the three: 632 kWh/year for the E080, 821 for the E100, 926 for the E130, all at an Integrated Energy Factor of 2.35 L/kWh. That is a measured number from a standardized test, so multiplying it by an electricity rate produces a real annual cost rather than an estimate.

None of the four AlorAir units is ENERGY STAR listed at all. They are commercial units, and the certification programme doesn’t cover them. That is not a defect — it means the registry has nothing to say about them, and neither do we.

AlorAir publishes rated wattage for exactly one unit in our catalog, the HDi90 at 293 W. For the HD55, HDi100 and Storm LGR Extreme, the sheets give amperage (4.1 A, 6.82 A and 5.62 A) but no wattage, and amps multiplied by volts gives apparent power, not the real power draw a cost calculation needs. We won’t perform that multiplication and present the result as a wattage, so those three units carry no cost figure anywhere on this site.

If a verified operating cost is something you want before buying, that is a straightforward win for AprilAire, and it is worth being precise about why: not because AprilAire units are necessarily cheaper to run, but because their cost is knowable from published data and their competitors’ is not.

Coverage claims can’t be compared between the two brands

Both brands publish a claimed coverage area in square feet. Lined up side by side, the numbers don’t make sense:

  • AprilAire E080, 80 pints/day AHAM — 4,400 sq ft claimed
  • AlorAir Sentinel HDi90, 90 pints/day AHAM — 2,600 sq ft claimed

The AlorAir unit removes more water per day by the same test standard and claims 41% less coverage. Across the rest of the two lines the pattern holds: AprilAire claims 5,500 sq ft for the E100 and 7,200 for the E130, while AlorAir claims 1,300 for the HD55, 2,900 for the HDi100 and 2,300 for the Storm LGR Extreme.

Divide each manufacturer’s own coverage claim by its own AHAM capacity and the disagreement is stark — and, more tellingly, each brand is almost perfectly consistent with itself:

Claimed coverage per pint/day of AHAM capacity. Each manufacturer’s own claimed coverage area divided by its own AHAM capacity rating. Both brands are internally consistent and the two disagree by roughly a factor of two, which is why coverage claims cannot be compared across brands.

AprilAire lands on 55.0, 55.0 and 55.4 sq ft per pint/day across three different units — near enough to a fixed rule that it looks like one. AlorAir lands between 23.6 and 29.0. Neither brand is lying. They are assuming different conditions — how leaky the space is, how humid, how hard the unit is expected to work — and neither publishes those assumptions in a form that lets you reconcile the two. So a coverage claim is useful for comparing two units within a brand, and close to meaningless across brands. The pint numbers use different bases too

AlorAir publishes two capacity figures for each unit: an AHAM rating and a saturation rating. The HDi100 is 100 pints/day at AHAM 80°F/60% RH and 220 pints/day at saturation. The HDi90 is 90 and 198. The HD55 is 55 and 120. The Storm LGR Extreme is 85 and 180.

AprilAire publishes the AHAM figure only — saturation is absent from all three E-series records we hold.

Compare AHAM to AHAM and the two brands line up honestly: the E100 and the HDi100 are both 100-pint units on the same test. The trap is a retail listing quoting AlorAir’s saturation number, which is roughly double, against an AprilAire AHAM number. A “220-pint” AlorAir and a “130-pint” AprilAire are not what they look like.

Filtration, pumps and warranty go back and forth

Filtration favours AprilAire on consistency. All three E-series units carry a MERV 8 filter. AlorAir is split: the HD55 and Storm LGR Extreme are MERV 8, but the HDi90 and HDi100 are MERV 1, which is minimal filtration by comparison. In a dusty crawl space that difference is worth weighing, and it runs against the two AlorAir units that otherwise look strongest.

Condensate pumps favour AlorAir. The HDi90, HDi100 and Storm LGR Extreme all include one. None of the three AprilAire units does. If your drain point is above the unit, that is either a bundled feature or a separate purchase.

Warranty slightly favours AlorAir: 6 years on the HD55 and HDi90, 5 on the HDi100 and Storm LGR Extreme, against 5 across the AprilAire line.

Noise, as published, favours AprilAire: 45 dB on the E080, 50 dB on the E130 and 55 dB on the E100, against 52 dB for the HD55, 58 dB for the HDi90 and Storm LGR Extreme, and 60 dB for the HDi100. These are manufacturer figures measured under conditions neither brand states in the records we hold, so treat them as a rough ordering rather than a precise gap.

Matching the two brands to what you actually care about

Temperature decides the question for a lot of people, but it isn’t the only priority anyone brings to this. Each row below is settled by a published specification on the seven units we hold data for, and both brands win rows:

Two of those rows deserve a caveat. The filtration row is the one place where AlorAir’s own line works against itself: the HDi90 and HDi100 are the units most people shortlist, and they are also the two with MERV 1 filters, while the cheaper HD55 and the Storm carry MERV 8. And the noise figures come from manufacturer sheets that don’t state their measurement conditions, so treat them as an ordering rather than a precise gap.

Where we’d start

If your crawl space goes below 50°F at any point in the winter, start with AlorAir. The AprilAire line’s stated floor rules it out, and no other advantage compensates for a unit that isn’t rated to run when you need it.

If your crawl space stays above 50°F — sealed, encapsulated, somewhat conditioned — start with AprilAire. You get a running cost you can actually verify before you buy, MERV 8 filtration across the line, and the quietest published figures of the seven units here. Add the cost of a condensate pump if your drain runs uphill.

The honest summary is that these two brands aren’t really competing for the same installation. AlorAir builds for the cold, wet, commercially-derived end of the problem and documents its capacity thoroughly; AprilAire builds for conditioned residential spaces and documents its energy use thoroughly. Decide which description fits your crawl space first, and the brand follows from it.
